Poatina Hot Glass Studio

Poatina Hot Glass Studio

A unique and fascinating medium brings a range of unexpected qualities

A unique aspect of Fusion’s arts developments in Poatina has been the focus on glass as a creative medium.  Keith Dougall, an accomplished glass artist and educator from Canberra relocated to Poatina in 2002 where he took up leadership of the Fusion Arts Colony. Keith’s skills and influence initially led to a number of kiln-formed glass workshops using very limited equipment and facilities. In 2009 Keith and others worked to establish Poatina Hot Glass Studio, which has allowed glass to be blown and worked in its molten state using traditional glass blowing techniques.

The Hot Glass Studio is the first teaching facility for Glass Blowing to be established in Tasmania, offering tuition to school, TAFE and university students as well as members of the general public. Glass, with its mysterious and fascinating properties has also proven to be a very attractive and effective medium for working with disadvantaged youth and fostering artistic development in a wide range of individuals. The glass medium has also become a feature of Fusion’s artistic activities in Poatina and the Poatina Hot Glass Studio will be relocated to the new Arts Centre building in 2012, putting the centre and the village on the map as major tourist destination.
